I had to start my list of frightening movies to watch with John Carpenter's classic, Halloween. The film stars a young Jamie Lee Curtis trying to fight for her life and save her friends from an escaped institutionalized psycho murderer, Michael Myers. Although this movie came out more than 30 years ago, it is still terrifying today. Audiences love Michael Myers so much, they made 8 Halloween movies and in 2007 Rob Zombie remade this classic hit. The original Halloween only cost $300,000 and ended up pulling in more than $55 million. Wow!
There was a recent remake of The Evil Dead, but nothing can compare to Sam Raimi's original version. This movie has a cult following and was used as a template for countless horror movies after its release. The plot isn't too different than your typical horror movie: a group of friends travel to a cabin in the woods where they unknowingly read a book that sends flesh-possessing demons to terrorize them. One of my favorite facts about this movie is that Sam Raimi found the cabin used for filming in the woods and then burned it down after he was done filming. All that's left is the brick chimney and very few people know where it's located.
Audition is one of my favorite horror movies because the person providing the horror is a woman. This Japanese horror film directed by Takashi Miike is about a widowed man who arranges an "audition" for women for a movie when what he is really looking for is a wife. He meets Asami, who appears to be passive and mysterious, but he soon learns that his first impression is far from the truth. When he starts uncovering who she really is, you will be jumping out of your seat!
Insidious is about a family that is looking to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child into a realm known as "The Further." The family explores the paranormal and relives the past. This is a great horror movie because there are many twists and turns and you really want to see the son get help. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat screaming!
I love horror films that are based on a true story like The Conjuring. The plot is about paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who try to help a family who is being terrorized by a dark entity in their farmhouse. The escalating terror is enough to give you nightmares. The Conjuring has been dubbed one of the scariest movies in recent history. Are you brave enough to watch it?
Whether or not you believe in the paranormal, all of the Paranormal Activity movies are scream-inducing. The movies are great at building slow dread. You know something is about to happen, but you don't know when. It's this technique that really makes you scream! The movies are about families who get disturbed nightly by a demonic presence. They decide to set up video cameras so they can see what's going on for themselves. You will sleep with the lights on for weeks after watching these films.
Sinister has many graphic scenes that are absolutely horrifying. The premise is that a true-crime writer moves into the home where the crime scene of the murder he is investigating took place. Upon checking out the attic, he finds a box of 8mm home movie films that suggest the murder he is researching is the work of a serial killer who has been at it for decades. My piece of advice, when you see the film titled "Lawn Work," close your eyes! The ending has a great twist that will leave you horrified.
Of course I had to include Scream on my list of movies that will make you scream! The plot is about a sadistic killer, Ghostface, who kills of teenagers. One girl and her friends begin thinking about the unspoken rules of horror films and realize they are living in a real-life nightmare. Ghostface has been haunting audiences for years and years, making this film a classic. Nearly 50 gallons of fake blood were used in the making of Scream. Now that's a lot of blood!
Upon its release in 1999, The Blair Witch Project was one of the most innovative horror movies of its time. The plot is about three film students who go missing after going into the woods of Maryland to make a documentary about the legend of the Blair Witch, leaving only their footage behind. The directors wanted the audience to believe this was real footage and that all of the events shown on the film really happened. The filmmakers put up missing posters of the cast of the show before the Cannes Film Festival to make it seem more believable. The actors were given a description of the legend, but most of the dialogue was improvised. They interviewed real townsfolk for the story and even though the premise of the Blair Witch was completely made up, several people acted like they had heard the legend and spoke about it. The filmmakers didn't tell the cast about many of the horrifying things that were going to happen to them for filming so that they could get genuine reactions. All of this makes for one terrifying movie! The ending of this movie is so scary, it will give you nightmares
These frightening movies to watch will be a hit at your Halloween party if you're looking for a scream-fest. All of them have great twists and scenes to leave your hair standing on end. What are you favorite frightening movies to watch?
