What the upcoming blockbuster movies of 2012-2013 have to offer all promise to be amazing. There are some romances, some exciting action adventures, and plenty of thrillers too. No matter what your favorite genre, you'll find at least a few upcoming winter blockbusters you'll want to see. I promise! Winter is the perfect time to see new movies, because what's better than getting cozy with your partner and a bucket of popcorn or hanging out with your girlfriends and the latest action star? Start saving dates on your calendar, ladies, because you won't want to miss these popular winter films!
It's probably no surprise that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey makes the top of the list of upcoming blockbuster movies 2012-2013 edition. I'm obsessed with all things Hobbit after all. However, this film is also making huge waves. Fans of the first trilogy, fans of Tolkien, fans of fantasy … they're all clamoring to see the adventures of Gandalf, Bilbo, and all those dwarves. Since this is just the first installment, there will be two more blockbusters to pine for in the meantime! By the way, it opens nationwide on Friday, December 14, so get your tickets!
Quentin Tarantino's next movie is one of the most exciting upcoming blockbusters for 2012-2013, at least in my opinion. I only recently saw (read: paid attention to) the preview, but wow. I'm not even the hugest Tarantino fan but I can't wait to see this. The previews are riveting, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio look like they have great chemistry, I've got a huge crush on Kerry Washington courtesy of Scandal, plus Samuel L. Jackson. I mean, what else do you need? How about a really well done premise added in, then? It drops on Christmas though, so I wonder how that's going to go.
I think one of the reasons Les Miserables is set to be a blockbuster is because it's going to draw curiosity crowds. Fans of the spectacular musical are eager to see how it will look, especially compared to the 1998 version, and lots of people are eager to see how Anne Hathaway does as Fantine. Me, I'm a band geek; I've been enamored with Les Mis since I can remember. I'm just as eager to see Anne's chops, plus I think they made some interesting casting choices. Of course, I'll also see anything with Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, and Hugh Jackman. What do you think of Sacha Baron Cohen as Thénardier? One thing's for sure, I think the cinematography will be gorgeous. It's already an Oscar contender, so you'll have to decide whether to see it or Django Unchained on December 25!
There are plenty of upcoming blockbuster movies for 2012-2013 with thrilling action and adventures, but I'm betting a lot of thriller lovers are going to see this one. Why? Arnold Schwarzenegger as Sheriff Ray Owens. There's small town charm, drug running, prison escapes, mercenaries … not piquing your interest? The ensemble cast rounds the story out nicely, so give it a chance. Forest Whitaker, Luis Guizman (I love that man), talented Harry Dean Stanton, and Johnny Knoxville (I love that man also) come together to complement Arnold's performance. Well, hopefully. Check it out on January 18, 2013, and see for yourself.
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten the younger audiences. There are plenty of upcoming winter blockbusters for them as well, but I chose this one because I'm sure Gleeks everywhere will be flocking to see this one. It's opens to an initially limited release in January, but I bet it's going to go nationwide faster than expected – and I'll be in line to see it. See, this is a special film. Written by and starring Glee's own Chris Colfer, I think it's a movie that needs to be seen, because it's different than the usual teen movie. The premise of having the main protagonist dead and looking back interests me, and I think that lots of little nuances in this film will be almost painfully poignant.
I had to include this. So many people are eager to see it, and to be honest, I probably will as well. I have this weird, inexplicable crush on Bruce Willis, and John McClane is just his character. Hopefully he won't go the way of Rocky, but the premise seems interesting enough and you get to see McClane with his son. Presumably the good guys win, but hey, if it means hearing another “Yippee ki yay,” then I'm game.
There aren't enough comedies on this list! Why do I think this will be one of the most popular winter films? How about some Christopher Walken? Given that he's paired with Al Pacino, I think this might be a sleeper hit. I might be wrong, but I bet it will still be highly entertaining. Walken's dramatic brand of comedy against Pacino's comedic brand of drama … oh, it's going to be beautiful.
When it comes to upcoming blockbuster movies 2012-2013 is an exciting season! There's a lot of Oscar buzz for many of these films and, regardless of awards, they all look highly entertaining. I also have to mention that West of Memphis, the follow up to the Paradise Lost trilogy, comes out on Christmas as well. Not a lot of big buzz, but I can't wait to see it. What upcoming winter blockbusters are you most excited to see? If your favorite pick didn't make the list, don't be afraid to share!
